I saw this story online this morning and it really disturbs me.

From CBS Chicago

Stephon Watts, 15, was shot and killed by Calumet City police officers on Feb. 1, 2012. Police said he had cut an officer with a kitchen knife, but his family said it was only a butter knife.

Shoot him in the foot.. Shoot him in the leg.. Even the shoulder would have been fine.. Throw your nightstick at his head… Heck, blow his hip clean off….Why KILL a 15 year old kid? Was he that big mean and scary? Show me a GOOD reason to KILL .vs. DISABLE.. Ponderous, man… Just Ponderous.. I do guarantee you this.. we will NEVER hear the REAL story as to why this child is dead.. Ain’t gonna happen.. Law Enforcement is given the control to make these decisions and that’s fine. I have great respect for Police Officers. I come from a family full of cops.. I just don’t think it was the best decision they could have made in this case.

Discuss ..

You don’t have to be “big mean and scary” to die from a knife wound from anyone regardless of age. It could of been at close contact and happened very fast I’m sure. The cop just knows the kid has a knife and cut him with it in a split second. I’m not gonna wait to see if it’s a ginsu or not before I blast him, that could cost me my life. Frankly if you’re dumb enough to attack a cop with a weapon, you deserve to die. Call it Darwinism or indiference on my part but I have no sympathy for someone getting smoked for this.

The family and two local news outlets in Chicago confirm it was a butter knife..
Cops say.. “kitchen knife” .. play on words..

Doesn’t matter the weapon or the age of the assailant…someone comes at you with a knife…the officer had to defend himself. And why shoot to wing him? Training states that you go “center-mass”. That way you have a better chance of stopping the attack. Try to wound the guy and you run the risk of him doing damage to you.

a 15 year old kid with a knife, cops with guns. Hmmmmmmmm , need I say more. I think the cops are more dangerous. Lets see it dont take rocket science. They could have tazed him. Idiots

A cop, a biker, a mailman, a housewife … if you are confronted with a weapon and it’s used on you and injures you, your first thought isn’t, oh, let me see what he just cut me with. Oh heck – it’s just a butter knife … your first thought is to protect yourself. Police officers are no different than anyone else. They have more training, but their training isn’t shoot to wound. Their training is to stop the threat.

@ Garrison. You are right. They are trained to stop the threat. Which includes using a tazer. Which is what they could have done.

Did they even have a taser? Many departments don’t due to cost. Many will ask, why don’t they carry bean bags, ropes, yadda yadda, the list goes on and on. The real question should be “Why is a young kid coming at the police with a knife” Weild a knife and attack, expect to get shot.

I understand even the best parenting cannot prevent kids from doing the wrong thing but odds are if the parents had a solid positive influence on this child we would not even have this story to talk about. I know thats not true 100% of the time but the majority of kids raised correctly wouldnt be in this situation. it goes deeper then telling your kid not to take a weapon to school . It could be the kid was getting bullied or picked on. To the best of our abilities it is up to us parents to TRY OUR BEST to understand how our child feels or what negative issues are going on in thier lives. This is a little deeper comment then the KID vs COP angle but i bet it is perhaps where the real truth lies.

This just proves peoples ignorance when it comes to law enforcement! First thing is that law enforcement are trained to shoot center mass for a number of reasons but most importantly to stop the threat that is trying to harm them or someone else. Another good reason is so the cop doesn’t miss the arm he was trying to hit and put a bullet between the eyes of little Jane hiding in the corner. As another comment that was made … your TV version of the local cop in which you think you are an expert is wrong … not all Law Enforcement agencies have tazers! Some do and most the time they are an effective tool so stop a threat but not always. We also do not know if the officers had time to utilize the tazer … if they even had them.
You people just need to quit your Monday morning quarterbacking and support your local law enforcement and fire departments!

Amen Bob!! I get so sick of 10 minute DNA test results and instant fingerprint ID’s. The general public has absolutely no idea what really happens.
