Drought and Disease Take Heavy Toll on Nebraska’s Deer Population

Posted 2 years ago

By Associated Press

deerDrought and disease last year caused significant reductions in whitetail deer populations in Nebraska which cut hunting permit sales and harvest numbers.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says deer permit sales in 2012 declined 13 percent to 122,214 and the total deer harvest fell 30 percent to 60,548.

Kit Hams, the Nebraska Game and Parks’ big game program manager says most herds will recover in four to five years from an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, which killed thousands of deer last year. Deer numbers also were affected by loss of habitat due to drought and other factors.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Board will meet Friday in Kearney to consider game recommendations for this year.

I didn’t even need a permit to kill a deer last year…got one with my truck. This lie of saying teh population is in decline is just that. A lie. There are more deer on the road in broad daylight than I have EVER seen.

I agree! The damn deer are in my yard all the time eating on my trees and bushes! I say leave the hunting season open all year with free permits!

If the deer come on your property kill them. Thay are tresspassing. You have the right to protect your property. If you hit one with your car sue the state. The state charges to hunt deer. The state says the deer are their property. The state has an obligation to control that property. So if you hit one it is the states fault and they need to pay for the damages.

Hunting and fishing bring so much to Nebraska economy. why would you want all of this to be gone? hunters generate over $14 billion in the US… it would be absolutely absurd to get rid of such things.

it’s absolutely absurd that the wardens treat hunters like they are poachers no matter how legal things are done. They are nazi’s. Let people stop hunting and fishing in neb for 3 years and then see how that affects the game and parks budget then they might see that hunters and fisherman are why they have jobs. A little respect goes a long ways in the outdoor world. So instead of hiding in the bushes trying to catch someone with a fish thats 1/8th of an inch to small go do your job and stop wasting my money.

Nebraska is one of the cheapest places to hunt and fish. The game commission makes money off out of state people. Why fine them when you can fine the locals and keep getting the little bit of income from out of staters. The in state people will pay the fine. It’s always cheaper to pay the fine even if you are innocent than it is to hire a lawyer. That’s the problem and the fish cops know this.
