Hastings Ethanol Plant Shuts Down

ethanol-plant(AP) — A Hastings ethanol plant that announced in February that it would temporarily shut down will not reopen.

The Ag Processing Inc. cooperative said Friday that it is permanently shutting down the 55-million-gallon-a-year plant, citing the plant’s age and high utility costs associated with running it.

Officials had cited a slowdown in the economy, high corn prices and low oil prices for the temporary shutdown.

Matt Caswell, vice president of corporate relations with AGP in Omaha, said the company didn’t see “any turn-around in the industry anytime soon.”

Most of the plant’s 43 employees found jobs within AGP’s other operations in Hastings. AGP also operates a soybean processing plant, vegetable oil refinery and an AminoPlus production facility in the city.

APG says none of those facilities have been impacted by the ethanol plant’s closure.

Probobly closing because its subsidies are being cut. I told everyone 5-10 years ago it wouldn’t take long for all these plants to become scrap stainless steel. Looks like this is one of many closing or already closed.

You should inform yourself before making ignorant statements. The ethanol industry is no longer subsidized and the newer technology plants are making great profits right now. This plant was an older inefficient plant….

no longer subsidized? who is making ignorant statements? You are full of it. I guess mandating 20% ethanol in gasoline isn’t a “subsidy”. just because you overproduce, and have nowhere to go with it, the gov. mandates the new “mix ratios”. no matter the fact its harder on your engine, and ethanol is a “net BTU” loser. Sounds like a great deal to me ! I guess its great if you’re in the ethanol business tho !

30 billion dollars in tax credits ending in dec. 2011……..new legislation passed earlier this year adding another 2.2 billion in tax credits for 2013. like to know anything else?

RFS “Renewable Fuel Standards” a federal policy requiring ethanol to be blended in gasoline at annually increasing amounts. Also, by the way, increasing the price of food at 28% higher than the rate of inflation. Also, ethanol only has 2/3 the energy of gasoline, therefore, “watering down” gasoline with ethanol produces less miles per gallon than it “decreases” the price of fuel. Ever put e-85 in your vehicle? Just how good of mileage do you get? But I am sure you already know this…..you just don’t want the consumer to.
