NEMA(AP) — Some volunteer recovery work following a powerful tornado in northeast Nebraska has been halted because of safety concerns.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says the decision to halt volunteer work in Wayne on Tuesday was due to high winds. Volunteers had been working outdoors earlier in the day.

The American Red Cross says volunteers from Nebraska and southwest Iowa are staffing the resource center at the National Guard Armory in Wayne. Trained volunteers are driving through the community to provide meals, snacks and water.

NEMA says multiple people were injured when a tornado moved across part of Wayne on Friday and damaged businesses and homes.
