Don Paul Beckmann, age 78 of North Platte, passed away February 24, 2014.
Don was born November 3, 1935 in Chapman, NE to Frederick “Fritz” and Rose (Ruff) Beckmann. He grew up there and graduated from high school in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1955 until 1957. He married Virjean Irvine and to this union 3 children were born, Doug, Dale and Diane. He worked as a Brakeman on the UPRR for 38 years, retiring in 1993. On June 1, 1987 he married Lynette Call. Don was a member of UTU, RSVP, Telephone Pioneers and the Eagles Club. He and his brother Dan had their own polka band, “The Polka Playboys”, in Grand Island. He was a delivery driver for over 20 years for Meals On Wheels and received the Golden Senior Award in 2008. He was a people person who enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, shooting pool and helping others.
Don is survived by his wife Lynette; children Doug (Deb) Beckmann of North Platte, Dale (Terri) Beckmann of Golden, CO, and Diane Beckmann of Gainesville, TX; brother Dan (Lois) Beckmann of North Platte; stepchildren Charlene Dunn (Larry Kuhlmann) and Julian (Lynda) Jarvis; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother Leroy; mother-in-law Ellen Call; and stepson Chris Jarvis.
Memorials may be made to the North Platte Senior Center or Holy Spirit Catholic Church and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com. Christian Wake Services will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday February 27, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday February 28, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Reverend James Novakowski as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
