Now, several retirees are suing.
Four retirees filed the lawsuit Thursday in Douglas County District Court, saying the district is bound by its promise to provide the benefit to employees for life, and to their spouses for six months after they die. The monthly discount ranged from 25 percent to 30 percent.
The retirees are seeking class action status to cover about 500 OPPD retirees.
The utility says it discontinued the discounts as part of a larger concession package expected to save ratepayers $7 million a year. The discount to retirees accounts for less than $350,000 of that.
