A 22-year-old North Platte woman has been arrested after her 7-month-old son was flown to an Omaha hospital for treatment of head injuries.
According to Officer Beth Kerr, police responded to the Great Plains Health Emergency Room after staff reported a child with a suspicious head injury.
Doctors determined that the child needed to be flown to an Omaha hospital. In Omaha, doctors found the child had bleeding in the brain and bleeding from his retinas.
Police interviewed the child’s mother, Shawlen Johnston, in regards to how the child was injured.
Investigators determined that Johnston’s story was not consistent with the injuries the child had sustained and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
On January 2, officers received a tip that Johnston was at a residence in the 200 block of South Silber.
Officers made contact with Johnston and placed her under arrest. She was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center and charged with child abuse, a Class II felony.
Kerr says the child is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery. The child and an older sibling have been made wards of the state.
