LEXINGTON, Neb. — A North Platte man was injured and another driver killed in a two-vehicle crash early Monday morning west of Lexington, according to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 3:38 a.m. Sept. 15, the Dawson County 911 dispatch center received multiple calls about a motor vehicle accident about a quarter-mile east of Road 429 and U.S. Highway 30.

Deputies arrived to find a 1988 GMC pickup and a 2000 Honda CR-V, both heavily damaged, in the north ditch.

Investigators said the pickup, driven eastbound by 23-year-old Jay Cooper of North Platte, crossed the center line and struck the westbound CR-V driven by 39-year-old Luis A. Hernandez-Zavala.

Hernandez-Zavala was pronounced dead at the scene. Cooper and a female passenger in the Honda were transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with injuries. Authorities said seat belts were in use.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Lexington Fire and Rescue, the Dawson County Attorney’s Office, Priority Medical, and Rand &amp; Brian’s Towing.

NebraskaLand Bank Welcomes Darby Smith to Mortgage Department

SEPTEMBER 16, 2025 &nbsp;(NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp; —&nbsp;&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted local commercial vehicle inspections on Tuesday, September 16th, in Lincoln County.

During this effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted 20 vehicle inspections. Troopers discovered 31 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed 3 vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road).

Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. Troopers issued a total of 6 citations during the inspections.

During the inspections, troopers also issued a total of 4 CVSA decals. The decals indicate that the vehicle did not have any immediate safety issues.

The effort focuses on commercial vehicles that may not pass-through weigh stations as part of their regular routes.

The MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels, and permits associated with commercial vehicles. The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division.

NSP: Local Truck Inspections Held in Lincoln County

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Mark Cooper, 73, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 11, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for violating the Lacey Act. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Cooper to two years’ probation, a $5,000 fine, and $15,000 restitution. In addition to the sentence imposed, Cooper abandoned a 5 X 5 mule deer taxidermy mount originating from the illegal 2019 mule deer hunt associated with the conviction, three additional mule deer taxidermy mounts and antler sets, and several white-tailed deer antlers.&nbsp; Judge Bazis also ordered that Cooper shall not hunt, fish, trap, guide, outfit, or otherwise associate or be in the field with anyone engaged in those activities for a period of two years.

Enacted 125 years ago, the Lacey Act protects the nation’s wildlife resources by prohibiting wildlife violations that cross state or international borders. A joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division determined that Dustin Noble operated a big game guiding and outfitting business from his North Platte residence and provided illegal hunting and guiding services to paying clients, family, and other associates, many from outside the state of Nebraska, between 2015 and 2021. Noble also operated a commercial taxidermy business providing services of converting hides, skins, antlers, and other trophy parts of wildlife into taxidermy mounts. Some of Noble’s taxidermy clients included hunters unlawfully guided by Noble.&nbsp; During those hunts Noble’s friends, associates and clients agreed with Noble to violate Nebraska hunting laws to take wildlife including mule deer and wild turkeys.

The investigation determined that on numerous occasions Cooper, a close associate of Noble, hunted with and on various occasions accompanied Noble while providing guiding services to hunting clients, and assisted Noble transporting raw hides for the Noble Outdoors taxidermy business. On October 31, 2019, Cooper illegally killed an approximately 172-inch 5 X 5 mule deer during the archery deer season in Lincoln County, Nebraska, while accompanied by Noble and two Noble Outdoors clients.&nbsp; Cooper killed the mule deer from a seated position within Noble’s pickup while parked on a public roadway with a center-fire rifle.&nbsp;&nbsp;Under Nebraska state law, hunters are prohibited from possessing firearms or using firearms to hunt deer during the archery season and from shooting from or over a roadway.&nbsp; On November 7, 2019, Cooper delivered a shipment of raw wildlife skins on behalf of Noble Outdoors to a commercial carrier.&nbsp; Cooper delivered the shipment containing numerous wildlife skins knowing the shipment was destined for a fur dressing company in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and knowing it contained illegally taken wildlife including at least Cooper’s 172-inch mule deer and another trophy-sized mule deer Cooper knew was&nbsp;taken illegally by Noble on October 28, 2019.

The investigation substantiated 114 unlawful hunts conducted and provided by Noble during the course of the conspiracy. Noble’s unlawful activities primarily targeted trophy-sized mule deer, including early season mule deer in velvet antlers. As revealed by extensive evidence obtained during this investigation, Noble’s illegal hunts included the taking of more than 12 species of wildlife, including most notably: 61 mule deer, 33 wild turkeys, 4 pronghorn, 3 white-tailed deer, an American alligator, a timber rattlesnake, and approximately 12 upland game birds, migratory non-game birds, game fish, and furbearing or non-game animals.

This sentencing completes the final prosecution of numerous defendants related to violations committed by Dustin Noble and Noble Outdoors associates and clients between 2015 and 2021. Twenty defendants have been collectively sentenced to 22 months’ imprisonment, 15 years’ probation, 32 years’ hunt/fish/trap restrictions, and ordered to pay more than $275,000 in fines and restitution for state and federal convictions related to this case. The investigation included the seizure and subsequent forfeiture or abandonment of more than 50 trophy wildlife antlers or taxidermy mounts from 27 Noble Outdoors clients or associates.

The operation was a joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division.

Noble Outdoors Associate Sentenced for Lacey Act Violation for 2019 Mule Deer Hunt

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced that Michael W. Stroble, 32, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 11, 2025, in federal court in Lincoln for one count of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine actual. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Stroble to 138 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Stroble’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Between July 2022 and February 2023, Joey Romero, Jamie Hopkins, Michael Stroble, Luke Schwartz, and others conspired to sell methamphetamine in and around North Platte.&nbsp; The group was responsible for the distribution of pounds of methamphetamine and was subject to multiple controlled buys, search warrants, and arrests.&nbsp;

By January 2023, Stroble and Hopkins were dating, living together, and selling methamphetamine together.&nbsp; On January 17, 2023, a controlled buy of 48 grams of methamphetamine from Schwartz and Stroble occurred less than half a mile from Hopkin’s home.&nbsp; On January 30, 2023, another controlled buy of 36 grams of methamphetamine from Hopkins and Stroble occurred at Hopkins’s home.&nbsp;

A search warrant was served on Hopkins’s residence in North Platte on February 7, 2023.&nbsp; During the search, law enforcement found multiple baggies of methamphetamine to include on a nightstand, a bed, Hopkins’s purse, on the floor, and in the toilet.&nbsp; Law enforcement also found two bongs, 29 pills, owe notes, three scales, spoons with residue, 224 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a box of Winchester .380 ammunition with 23 rounds in it, and empty baggies in the house.&nbsp;

Stroble’s co-defendants were sentenced in 2024. Schwartz was sentenced on September 5, 2024, to 120 months’ imprisonment; Hopkins was sentenced on October 17, 2024, to 120 months’ imprisonment; and Romero was sentenced on December 12, 2024, to 120 months’ imprisonment.

This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Ogallala Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations.

North Platte Man Sentenced to More Than 11 Years for Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The August plea deal of a North Platte man accused in multiple cases of violence against a woman continues to stir outrage, leading to a courthouse protest this week.

Nathan Creel, 29, accepted a plea agreement in Lincoln County District Court last month. Prosecutors dropped several charges — including assault and witness tampering — in exchange for his no-contest plea to first-degree domestic assault.

The charge stems from an April 26 incident at the Lincoln Highway RV Park. Deputies responding to the scene found a woman with her eyes swollen shut and bleeding from her nose and head. She was hospitalized in Lincoln and treated for multiple injuries to her head and upper body.

Creel had initially faced additional charges of first- and third-degree assault and two counts of witness tampering, after investigators said he urged the victim during jail video calls to withdraw her statements. Those charges were dismissed under the plea deal.

On Tuesday, protesters gathered at the corner of 4th and Jeffers in front of the courthouse, saying the plea deal was far too lenient.

“This should be attempted murder,” said protester Kerri Tucker. “He was stomping on her face with cowboy boots when her daughter walked in — and her daughter is the only reason she’s alive right now. She underwent surgery for a detached retina and will likely be blind in that eye.”

Tucker showed photos of the victim before and after the attack. “She will never look the same again,” she said. “They threw out half his charges and gave him a plea deal. How many chances does a man get before he finally kills a woman? Nathan Creel will kill somebody if he gets out.”

For Jess Wilson, another survivor protesting outside the courthouse, the case is part of a larger crisis. “They are constantly reoffending. They manipulate, they control, they break women down mentally, emotionally, and financially until it turns physical. Too often, it ends with someone dead,” she said.

Wilson urged women to recognize the warning signs early and to speak up before it’s too late. “A lot of these relationships wear a mask, and you don’t even realize you’re in one until you’re trapped. Statistically, a woman can be abused 35 times before she actually reaches out for help,” she said. “Please — don’t wait. Reach out. Ask questions. There are people in this community who understand what you’re going through and will help you.”

She also cautioned that leaving can be dangerous, but silence is even more so. “Trying to get out can be the most dangerous time, but it’s not something you can take lightly. You deserve better. No one deserves to walk around with black eyes and broken noses,” Wilson said.

While the protest largely focused on women, Wilson and Tucker emphasized that men can also be victims of domestic violence. “Abuse doesn’t discriminate,” Wilson said. “We’re here for women today, but men face this too. They often stay silent because of stigma, but they deserve the same support and resources.”

Both women said Nebraska laws must change to better protect victims. “A piece of paper does not protect us,” Tucker said. “Probation and slaps on the wrist don’t protect us. This cycle has to end.”

Despite their anger, protesters said they were grateful law enforcement has taken Creel off the streets for now. “I want to give a shout out to the North Platte Police Department,” Wilson said. “They’re starting to realize this is a serious problem, and these guys need to be held accountable.”

Tucker added that protesters plan to return to the courthouse next month for Domestic Violence Awareness Month — which also coincides with Creel’s sentencing.

For now, Creel remains in custody at the Lincoln County Detention Center. The court has recommended an eight- to 10-year prison sentence, with formal sentencing set for Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m.

Protesters Call for Change After North Platte Man’s Plea Deal in Domestic Violence Case

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council moved quickly through its agenda Monday night, wrapping up its meeting in about 30 minutes, but not before approving a series of measures that will shape the city’s finances and services in the coming year.

Mayor Brandon Kelliher said the highlight of the evening was the passage of the city’s budget for fiscal year 2025–26.

Among the budget items was approval of a grant agreement with Visit North Platte. The funding will be used to improve slow-pitch softball fields at Cody Park’s Carpenter Fields, adding to a slate of upgrades in the area that already includes tennis, pickleball, and pool facilities.

The council also approved a wholesale power contract with Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD). Tom Kent, NPPD’s CEO, spoke with the council about statewide energy needs and upcoming generation projects.

NPPD plans to add about 700 megawatts of generation by 2029 and another 650 megawatts by the early 2030s. For comparison, Kelliher noted that Gerald Gentleman Station near Sutherland produces about 1,200 megawatts.

“Even though appliances are more efficient, households are using more power with TVs, computers, and electronics,” Kelliher said. “More generation is essential for Nebraska’s economic development.”

Power rates are expected to rise gradually, about 8 to 9 percent over the next eight years. The city plans to spread small increases over time to avoid sudden spikes.

For the fourth consecutive year, the city lowered its property tax levy. Kelliher said the reduction was modest but part of an effort to ease costs for homeowners.

Utility rates for electricity, water, and wastewater will increase by about 2.5 to 3 percent to keep up with rising expenses. User fees — covering everything from recreation center rates to trash bin costs — were also set, with the goal of keeping North Platte among the state’s more affordable communities.

The council approved an interlocal agreement with the North Platte Airport Authority to help stabilize its funding. Under the agreement, the city will provide monthly payments to the authority, which will repay the city with a small administrative fee. The move replaces the authority’s reliance on bank credit lines and is expected to save taxpayer money.

Kelliher also highlighted Constitution Day, noting a local celebration at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on the courthouse lawn, hosted by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A major reconstruction project is planned for one of North Platte’s busiest roadways. The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) will invest an estimated $12.6 million to rebuild northbound U.S. Highway 83/South Dewey Street, a project aimed at improving safety, pavement conditions, and long-term mobility.

The project, identified as Leota–1st Street (C.N. 61360), covers about 1.07 miles of roadway, beginning at the north approach slab of the South Platte River bridge near mile marker 82.05 and extending north of 1st Street at mile marker 83.12. Construction could also extend up to 1,000 feet beyond the listed limits to allow for pavement transitions.

The City of North Platte also intends to replace all water mains within the project limits before highway work begins.

When complete, the roadway will feature a 42-foot clear driving surface with barrier curbs and an improved pedestrian corridor. Subgrade preparation and a four-inch foundation course will be placed beneath the new pavement for added strength.

NDOT said construction will occur under traffic, with lane closures and controlled access. Some intersections may be closed for several weeks during certain phases. While access to businesses and residences will be maintained, drivers and property owners should expect temporary limitations at times.

The project will require the acquisition of additional property rights. This could include new right-of-way, temporary or permanent easements, and changes in access control. NDOT will contact affected property owners directly once the final design footprint is established.

As part of the Leota Street Traffic Study, NDOT reviewed a series of intersection design options to improve traffic efficiency at Leota, Francis, and Jeffers Streets. Proposals included roundabouts, one-way street conversions, and changes to signal timing.

All were eliminated due to safety, constructability, or operational concerns. The final design maintains the current roadway alignment while upgrading signals and pedestrian facilities.

Traffic volumes along the corridor are projected to remain steady at approximately 10,780 vehicles per day, including commercial truck traffic, through at least 2048.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 and finish by winter 2028, weather permitting.

The $12.6 million project will be funded through a combination of federal, state, and local sources.

If the project stays on schedule, the South Dewey Street corridor will be fully rebuilt within three years. NDOT officials said the upgrades are intended not only to repair existing pavement but also to prepare the route for decades of continued use by local residents, visitors, and freight traffic.

NDOT Announces $12.6 Million Plan to Rebuild South Dewey Street in North Platte

North Platte, NE – On October 13th and 14th, the best of Nebraska High School Class C girls’ golfers will compete in North Platte for the state championship title. The event is expected to draw 95-115 golfers to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Class C has a large following, so we can expect many families, friends, and well-wishers to come to North Platte to watch the tournament. Visit North Platte is seeking volunteers to assist in three areas: scoring monitors, spotters, and alternates.

One of the highly sought-after volunteer duties is for scoring monitors. These monitors will accompany athletes, personally record the hole-by-hole strokes of each golfer and help with the speed of play by watching tee shots and looking for lost balls. Scoring monitors are requested not to make any rulings. At least thirty scoring monitors will be needed throughout the tournament each day.

Another volunteer activity is a spotter. As a spotter, you will be assigned to monitor a designated area of the golf course to help golfers find their balls after they’ve taken their shots. Spotters are allowed to bring lawn chairs for their volunteer shift. Six to nine spotters will be needed throughout the tournament each day.

Visit North Platte: Seeking Volunteers for NSAA Class C Girls State Golf Championship

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Lincoln County will soon roll out a new tool to help combat substance abuse: a real-time Opioid and Stimulant Monitoring System designed to track risk factors, protective factors, and community needs.

Erin Bone, coordinator for Substance Abuse Prevention with Community Connections, said the project is part of a regional effort funded through the Iowa State University Public Science Collaborative. Lincoln County was one of only a handful of counties in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa selected to participate.

“This is a huge undertaking,” Bone said. “We’re getting a dashboard that helps us track risk and protective factors within our community. We’re really excited to launch it in the very near future.”

The dashboard will pull data from multiple partners, including Great Plains Health, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and Stop Overdose Nebraska. That information will allow prevention teams to identify trends—such as age groups, neighborhoods, or language demographics most affected by substance use—and tailor outreach accordingly.

Bone explained that the system won’t collect personal details but will instead provide broad demographic snapshots. “We’re not looking at specific names or addresses,” she said. “It’s very baseline data, but it will help us target how we talk to people and how we get information out there.”

One early finding is that areas north of the railroad in North Platte are underserved, and Bone hopes the dashboard will guide resources where they’re most needed. Data will also measure the effectiveness of local interventions, allowing organizations to adjust strategies in real time.

Community involvement has been central from the beginning. Listening sessions with nonprofits, law enforcement, schools, and health providers helped shape what the system should track and how it should be used. The goal, Bone said, is threefold: reduce overdoses, support at-risk populations, and strengthen local partnerships.

“We want to reduce harm, whether that’s lowering substance use overall or just getting more Narcan into the right hands,” Bone said. “At-risk populations need extra support, and that improves quality of life for everyone. And this is a great way to bring our community partners together.”

Lincoln County is also working to expand access to resources. While only two local pharmacies currently distribute free Narcan, a vending machine stocked with the overdose-reversing medication is expected to be available soon.

Bone encouraged residents to get involved by staying connected online and helping spread the word. “Support doesn’t have to be financial,” she said. “Go to our Facebook, like our stuff, share our stuff. If you want to be more involved, give us a call or stop by our office.”

Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation to host 22nd annual fundraiser Sept. 16

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A steak dinner, auctions, and live music will all be part of the 22nd annual Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

The evening begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Guests will enjoy a New York strip steak with baked potato, salad, dessert bar, and two complimentary drinks. Entertainment will be provided by the Flat Rock Irregulars, with a silent auction running from 5 to 7 p.m. and a live auction to follow.

Organizers Janet Cox and Kathy Hahn said the fundraiser plays a vital role in helping local cancer patients. The Gift of Hope provides financial assistance to families across western Nebraska — stretching as far as Lexington to the east, the Wyoming border to the west, and into South Dakota and Kansas. Support can include help with gas, utilities, and rent.

“All of our funding comes from donations and events like this banquet,” Hahn said. “Your donation means hope, relief, and strength for someone facing the fight of their life. No one should battle cancer alone.”

The foundation assists as many as 80 people each year, and every dollar raised stays in the region. Cox called the banquet “a really, really fun evening” and “a rewarding evening because we feel like we can help a lot of people.” She added that the community has been supportive across generations throughout the fundraiser’s 22-year history.

Organizers say the night promises not only good food and community spirit but also big-ticket auction items, including Husker volleyball tickets and Husker football tickets — with one package offering 50-yard line seats in the clubhouse.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Get ready, North Platte! St. Patrick’s Church is rolling out two full days of food, games, music, and family fun for its annual Block Party this weekend.

The celebration kicks off Saturday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. with an evening designed for adults. Guests can enjoy live music from Kim Baxter, a free-will donation nacho bar prepared by parish volunteers, and a beer garden featuring local craft brews from Ape Ship. The party takes over the parking lot at 5th and Walnut streets, and everyone is welcome — no church membership required.

Sunday, Sept. 14, from noon to 3 p.m., shifts the spotlight to families. Kids can jump into bounce houses, play cornhole and pickleball, or join games run by local sports teams, while parents enjoy a barbecue luncheon featuring shredded beef, scalloped potatoes, green beans, and pies for $12 per plate or $40 per family. The street north of the church will be blocked off to create a safe, festive space for everyone.

Raffles add extra excitement this year. Prizes include $500 cash, gift cards, and coveted reserved pews for Christmas Mass. A special $50 raffle offers one lucky winner a full year of tuition at North Platte Catholic Schools — only 200 tickets will be sold.

“Part of our faith is where God makes us part of His family. And what do families do? They get together,” said Father Johnathan Sorensen. “This block party is a big old family party.”

Maddy Krebs, a member of the organizing committee, said, “We wanted to create something for everyone — adults, kids, families, and anyone in the community who wants to come out. Seeing people connect and have fun is what makes it all worth it.”

She added, “It takes a lot of planning and support from local businesses and volunteers, but the smiles on people’s faces make it all worth it. I love watching kids play and families enjoy the day together.”

The weekend format, introduced three years ago, gives adults a night out while keeping Sunday fun for families and children. Volunteers and parishioners spend months preparing, with support from local businesses that donate meals, prizes, and other essentials.

“Community is at the heart of this event,” Father Sorensen said. “Whether it’s sharing a meal, winning a raffle, or just laughing together, it’s about building relationships and celebrating together.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — After years of running boards, hosting shows, and chasing stories across Nebraska, Allison Peck is now the news director North Platte didn’t know it needed — until now. Listeners quickly noticed her arrival on the airwaves, sending emails and texts praising the “new news lady” — articulate, clear, and engaging.

Peck is Eagle Media’s storyteller behind North Platte Post and Sandhills Post, bringing a mix of experience, energy, and a passion for local stories.

“Allison was the one we were waiting for,” said Operations Manager Derek Beck. “We had a lot of people that applied for this job. We were super picky about it, so this job’s been open since April I think. We really, really wanted to make sure that we didn’t hit a single or a double — we really wanted to hit a home run and we were very patient.”

Peck’s journey in radio began in McCook in 2016. Then a college student, she balanced her time between running the board for live sports broadcasts and serving as an unpaid intern. She managed summer remote events, hosted her own show, and even delivered weather forecasts. Within a year, she was promoted to paid intern while pursuing theater and media communications at Doane University.

When she returned to McCook in 2019, Peck took on a full-time role in sales. She also hosted a midday show, continued weather reports, and occasionally board operated. She worked closely with the operations manager daily, an experience that gave her a front-row seat to the complexities of running a station.

Those years gave her a reputation for versatility. “Which you can see, is why she was a really great candidate for this job, because [she's] kind of a Swiss Army knife that knows how to do a lot of things,” Beck said. “...but I kind of turned [her] loose after three days and said, hey, go do it.”

In fall of 2020, Peck left McCook to move to Lincoln. She worked as a client marketing coordinator in sales for NRG Media from May 2021 through September. That fall, her first daughter, Raegan, was born, and Peck stepped away from broadcasting and sales to focus on motherhood.

The next three years were a whirlwind of moves — a return to McCook, a short stay in Mitchell, then a year in Ogallala. Along the way, Peck and her husband, Joseph — a North Platte native and now EMT — welcomed their second daughter, Ryleigh, this past April.

“Being a stay-at-home mom was the most rewarding and the most overwhelming thing I’ve ever done,” Peck said. “I loved every moment with my girls, but I also felt like I was missing a part of myself.&nbsp; — My husband even says I come home happier. I feel like everyone gets a better version of me.”

For Beck, who worked with Peck years ago in McCook, seeing her return to radio was both exciting and natural. “You kind of have it in your head who that person might be or what they would sound like,” he said. “Literally when I saw [her] application come through, I’m like box checked, box checked, box checked.”

Listeners have echoed his confidence. “I don’t know how many texts and emails I’ve had saying hey, we like the new news lady. She sounds really good. She’s very articulate. The news is really good,” Beck said.

Now based in North Platte, Peck has taken on the dual role of directing news coverage and hosting Good Morning North Platte at 9 a.m. on 98.1 FM. She describes herself first and foremost as a storyteller — a passion rooted in theater from the age of five and carried through her years of writing, reporting, and broadcasting.

“You do, you kind of light up about the news stuff,” Beck told her during their on-air introduction. “You’re easy to listen to. We’re just gonna continue to let you do some of the things that you enjoy doing. But I think that morning show on 98.1 has got your name kind of written all over it.” That show airs from 6 a.m to 10 a.m. with news and interview focus from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Peck said she hopes the community will share stories with her. 

“There’s only one of me and there’s a very big town,” she said. “If there’s news out there that I don’t know about that I should know about, if there’s an event happening that should be a story — yeah, definitely reach out. NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte Northside Association is hosting a “Meet Your Neighbor Block Party."

The event will be Thursday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Northside Gathering Grounds near Rodeo Road and Highway 83.

Organizers say the free, family-friendly event will feature games, music, snacks, drinks and prize giveaways. Beyond the fun, the association hopes the evening will help spark ideas for strengthening the city’s north side and encourage residents to share input about the neighborhood’s future.

“Our vision is to revitalize the Northside and unlock its potential for growth, creating more opportunities for small businesses and families,” said Northside Association member Chad Fosdick. “We want to see safe, clean recreation spaces, thriving businesses, and a destination that welcomes both residents and visitors.”

Association leaders say the block party is meant to blend the atmosphere of a town hall with a community celebration. Representatives will be available to take feedback, and suggestion cards will be provided. A “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program is also expected to be introduced, with organizers seeking both volunteers and community members who need assistance.

Nick McNew, Northside Association member, said the group was formed after conversations among community members who wanted a solution-focused organization for the Northside. Since hosting a successful town hall earlier this year, the association has been working to build momentum.

“We are just working together as a community to get people together to take pride in the town that we live in,” McNew said.

The event is hosted in partnership with NebraskaLand Bank and the Northside Gathering Grounds. All residents are encouraged to attend.

OGALLALA, Neb. — Mid-Plains Community College’s Ogallala campus is welcoming students this fall with a variety of classes and special programs, including late-start options and unique educational opportunities, college officials said Wednesday.

Jenny Soper, director of the Ogallala campus, said classes are in full swing, but students who missed the traditional August registration still have options. The college is offering 12-week courses beginning Sept. 15, providing a chance for high school students to earn dual credit—college and high school credit simultaneously—at no tuition cost.

“These classes give students a head start on the credits they’ll need for any degree path,” Soper said. “You only have to pay for books, and many courses are fully online now, so there’s flexibility for everyone.”

Among the classes available are English composition, college algebra, American government, and sociology. Soper emphasized the advantage of completing required courses while still in high school.

In addition to core academic offerings, the campus is hosting a conversational Spanish class. The 12-week course, led by an instructor based in Perkins County, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Perkins County High School. Enrollment remains open at $129, including a textbook, despite a pre-registration deadline.

The campus is also providing educational workshops for the wider community. In October, State Trooper Templet will conduct three free classes covering topics such as anti-bullying strategies and recognizing the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse. Soper said the sessions are designed for parents and community members who want to stay informed about pressing social issues.

“Whether it’s students looking to get ahead in their coursework or parents seeking educational resources, we encourage everyone to reach out,” Soper said. “Our staff is always available, and information is easy to find on our website or by visiting the campus.”

The Ogallala campus continues to highlight opportunities that combine convenience, accessibility, and practical learning experiences for both students and community members.

🎙️ Ogallala Campus of Mid-Plains Community College Offers Late-Start Classes, Special Programs This Fall 

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher outlined the city’s proposed budget, major community projects and ongoing revitalization efforts during a recap of Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The council began its session with the first public hearing on the city’s annual budget. Kelliher said the $38 million proposal continues efforts to lower the city’s property tax levy, which has dropped by more than a full percentage point over the past five years. A final council vote is expected Sept. 16, following publication and additional public comment.

“This year’s budget drops the levy by about four-tenths of a cent,” Kelliher said, noting the city’s focus on reducing costs through contract negotiations and insurance savings.

One of the biggest savings came in workers’ compensation insurance. The city secured a $400,000 reduction by shifting coverage to a new provider through a local agency, while maintaining property and liability insurance with its longtime carrier.

The council also addressed infrastructure, including approval of a water district to replace lines on Dewey Street in advance of a state highway project planned for 2027. A new sewer district was also approved to support commercial development on the city’s east side.

Kelliher highlighted progress on the new recreation center, expected to open in about nine to 12 months. Features include Nebraska’s first Ninja Cross obstacle course suspended above a pool and a modern climbing wall with multiple configurations. Both are expected to draw heavy community use and even competitions.

“These are amenities that not only give people something fun to do in the winter but also help attract visitors,” Kelliher said.

Other items included renewing the North Platte 80s baseball team’s license agreement for another season, recognizing volunteer service on local boards, and approving the purchase of a new jet truck for the wastewater department.

The council also granted a conditional use permit for a redevelopment project on Rodeo Road, where an old motel is being converted into updated apartments. The mayor said it aligns with broader revitalization in the area, including new housing developments and plans for a park on a former trailer site.

Kelliher noted construction has begun on a skate park at Centennial Park, with completion expected this fall.

“As long as we continue to invest in projects that make North Platte a place people want to come, we’ll grow our economy and reduce the property tax burden,” he said.

LEWELLEN, Neb. — Riders will saddle up at Ash Hollow State Historical Park on Sept. 6 for the Velvet Spurs’ annual horseback poker run, a fundraiser for the Friends of Ash Hollow.

The family-friendly event begins at 10 a.m. Mountain Time, with registration at the park’s main entrance. Riders will travel trails through the historic landmark, stopping at stations to collect poker cards. Prizes will be awarded for the top three hands, along with the worst hand.

“It’s very family-friendly. There’s no time event on it, so you don’t have to speed,” said Velvet Spurs President Jean Tobiasson. “You can take your time, enjoy looking at the wildlife and the history up there, and just bring the whole family.”

The event, now in its third year, will feature some newly mapped trails, including a lookout point offering views of Lake McConaughy. The ride is $10 per participant, with entry available the day of the event.

Following the ride, participants are invited to a potluck dinner. The Velvet Spurs will provide sloppy joes and tableware, and riders are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

If inclement weather forces a postponement, the event will be rescheduled for Sept. 20.

Ash Hollow, located at the west end of Lake McConaughy, holds deep historical significance as a Native American buffalo jump site and features preserved cultural landmarks.

HERSHEY, Neb. (Aug. 19, 2025) — The Hershey Lions Club is gearing up for a full day of small-town tradition and big-time entertainment Saturday as the Hershey Fall Festival returns, capped off by a concert featuring Texas country artist Casey Donahew.

The festival kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a parade along Main Street, winding down to the park where events continue throughout the day. Highlights include a prime rib lunch, car show, tractor display, local vendors, and the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department’s popular water fight. Other crowd favorites are set to return as well, including Cow Pie Bingo and the Beer Olympics at Kathy’s Place.

“This festival really brings everyone together all day,” said Lions Club member Justin Petska. “There’s something for everyone, from families at the park to folks who just want to come out and enjoy the concert at night.”

The evening festivities open at 5 p.m. with a beer garden and food vendors, followed by live music. Drew Phillips will open the show before Donahew takes the stage downtown against the backdrop of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks — a setting organizers say makes the event unique.

Advance tickets are $20 and available at Hershey State Bank locations in North Platte and Hershey, as well as online at outhousetickets.com. Tickets will also be available at the gate for $25. Drinks will be sold on a ticket system, with beer and seltzers available for $5 each.

Petska said the festival has become the Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser, helping to support community projects throughout the year. He credited sponsors and local support for making the event possible.

“When you see a thousand people packed into Main Street in Hershey, it’s pretty special,” Petska said. “We couldn’t put on a weekend like this without the help of our sponsors and the community.
