North Platte is celebrating one of its own as Gabriella “Gabby” Swift takes the title of Miss Nebraska's Teen and represents the state on the national stage. Gabby, a hometown girl through and through, recently competed at the national competition in Orlando, Florida, where she showcased her talent, passion, and dedication to community service.

Growing up in North Platte, Gabby was no stranger to the pageant world. Her grandfather, a longtime supporter of the Miss Nebraska program, often provided cars to winners, and Gabby spent much of her youth behind the scenes at the pageants. “We’ve hosted girls, done all the things behind the scenes, and then I finally, my senior year of high school, decided to try it out,” Gabby shared. “Now I’m here, and it’s just been amazing, especially being in my hometown.”

When asked about her favorite thing about North Platte, Gabby didn’t hesitate. “I would just say the community and the people,” she said. “I’ve had so much support—more than I even thought I would get—and it’s so surreal and amazing seeing people come together in support of me and my dreams and goals.”

Family and community play a big role in Gabby’s life. She fondly remembers Lake Maloney Golf Course, a spot tied to family memories and local traditions, including the Bob Spady Memorial Golf Tournament. “We’re kind of a golf family, so that course brings a lot of memories for us,” she said.

Outside of pageantry, Gabby enjoys a variety of activities, from Pilates and working out to spending time with friends and family. “I’m kind of a person who just loves different adventures,” she said. “A movie night, a car ride—whatever comes my way, I’m down for it.”

Gabby’s pageant journey began with a desire to honor her late grandfather’s legacy and evolved into a deep passion for advocacy. Her platform focuses on supporting eating disorder recovery, a cause close to her heart. “I was a gymnast my whole life, and as my body changed going through puberty, I struggled with food and self-image,” Gabby explained. “I want teens to know they’re more than their reflection. You’re not broken—you’re becoming.”

Through her advocacy, Gabby works with Nebraska senators to bring legislation supporting insurance coverage for eating disorder treatment to the next session. She also engages with students through programs like the “magic mirror” activity, where young children write positive affirmations about themselves on sticky notes to display on a mirror in their classroom.

Reflecting on her time at nationals, Gabby described it as an unforgettable experience. “Being on that stage with 51 other amazing girls was incredible,” she said. “Words can’t even describe it.” Her talent, a high-energy tumbling routine set to Let’s Get Loud, showcased her gymnastics background and set her apart from other contestants.

Gabby balances her role as Miss Nebraska Outstanding Teen with her studies as a freshman at the University of Nebraska, where she’s pursuing a pre-health major and is active in her sorority. “I’ve really learned how to balance a lot of things,” she said. “This experience is helping me develop skills I know will help me later in life."

Looking ahead, Gabby plans to continue her advocacy, visiting schools across Nebraska, meeting with legislators, and inspiring other teens. She also looks forward to crowning her successor next June, a milestone she describes as both emotional and exciting.

For young people considering entering pageants, Gabby offers encouraging advice: “It might sound cliché, but truly just go for it. Have confidence in yourself and believe you can. Entering this organization will change your life in the best way possible.”

Ogallala teen Addison L. Malone was sentenced Monday to serve two to five years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections for a 2024 vehicular manslaughter case that took the life of her passenger and friend, Nathan Sandoval. The sentence was handed down by Lincoln County District Court Judge Cindy R. Volkmer.

According to investigators, the fatal crash occurred on July 18, 2024, west of North Platte on a dead-end stretch of West A Street. Authorities say Malone was driving at a high rate of speed when she lost control and struck a large tree. The crash reportedly happened several hours before it was discovered, and evidence indicated alcohol was a factor. Investigators also believe Malone may not have realized she was approaching a dead end before the impact.

Malone was initially charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree murder, motor vehicle homicide, manslaughter, and minor in possession of alcohol. She later entered a no contest plea to a single count of manslaughter on August 11, 2025, as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. In exchange, the remaining charges were dismissed, and both sides agreed to recommend a sentence of two to five years in prison. Following the plea, Judge Volkmer ordered a presentence investigation before formally issuing the sentence this week.

At Monday’s hearing, Malone received the recommended sentence, which will be served in the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Under state law, the charge is classified as a Class 2A felony, carrying a potential maximum sentence of 20 years.&nbsp;

The crash and subsequent sentencing serve as a reminder of the consequences of impaired and reckless driving. Law enforcement officials have reiterated the importance of safe and sober driving, particularly among young drivers. The plea and sentencing conclude a year-long court process that began with multiple charges and ended in a negotiated resolution accepted by both the prosecution and the defense.

Ogallala Teen Sentenced to 2 – 5 Years for 2024 Fatal Crash

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Nathan Eugene Creel, 29, has been sentenced to 8 to 10 years in prison for a violent domestic assault that left a North Platte woman hospitalized with severe injuries earlier this year.

Creel was sentenced Monday in Lincoln County District Court. Judge John M. Gerrard ordered that the sentence be served consecutively to Creel’s existing federal sentence, meaning he must complete his federal time before beginning the new term. He will serve a minimum of eight years before being eligible for parole.

The case stems from an April 26, 2025 incident at the Lincoln Highway RV Park, where deputies found the victim with her eyes swollen shut, bleeding from the head and face, and unable to open her eyes. She was later airlifted to Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln and treated for multiple head and upper body injuries, including a detached retina.

Creel was charged with first-degree domestic assault causing serious bodily injury. In August, he pleaded no contest to the charge as part of a plea deal in which prosecutors dropped additional counts, including witness tampering and third-degree assault.

Prosecutors had recommended an 8–10 year sentence, which the judge agreed was appropriate given the violent nature of the attack and Creel’s prior record.

Creel has an extensive criminal history, including federal firearm convictions in 2017. According to court records, he was convicted in the Eastern District of California of:

He was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison and later placed on supervised release. In 2023, a federal court in Nebraska found that Creel had violated the terms of his supervision, leading to the revocation of his release and additional federal incarceration.

Creel remains in the custody of the Lincoln County Detention Center and will be transferred to state corrections to begin serving his term following his federal time.

NPPD: Seasonal Parking Reminder

North Platte, NE – Local students will have the chance to receive free eye exams and prescription glasses during a mobile clinic at Educational Services Unit 16, 1221 W. 17th St., on October 23–24, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The program, part of VSP Eyes of Hope, returns to the region in partnership with the Nebraska Optometric Association, the Nebraska Foundation for Children’s Vision, and the Nebraska Department of Education. It is designed to provide ESU 15 and ESU 16 students with access to essential eye care and eyewear—an important factor in academic success.

Tours and interviews with representatives from VSP Vision, the Nebraska Optometric Association, and the Nebraska Foundation for Children’s Vision will be available each day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Access to regular eye exams and proper eyewear plays a crucial role in a child’s ability to see clearly and succeed in school and beyond,” said organizers. “Yet not everyone has access to the care they need. In fact, 1.1 billion people worldwide live with vision impairment and limited access to care, which can especially hinder children’s academic progress.”

The VSP Eyes of Hope mobile clinics have been serving communities across the U.S. for nearly 20 years, partnering with eye doctors and non-profits to improve access to vision care. To date, the program has helped more than 4.3 million people receive free eye exams and eyewear.

Students participating in the North Platte clinic will receive a comprehensive eye exam, and those in need will get same-day prescription glasses at no cost. Families interested in having their children participate should contact their schools for registration details.

This clinic represents a valuable opportunity for students in North Platte and surrounding areas to get the vision care they need to thrive academically.

Free Eye Exams and Glasses Coming to North Platte Students This Week

Nebraska and Colorado are embroiled in a significant water dispute that has escalated to the U.S. Supreme Court. The conflict centers on the South Platte River, where Nebraska alleges that Colorado is violating the 1923 South Platte River Compact. Nebraska claims Colorado is restricting water flow and obstructing the construction of the Perkins County Canal, a $500 million project Nebraska says is necessary to secure more water for its use.

In response, Colorado officials argue that the lawsuit is premature and lacks merit. Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser have called Nebraska’s case a “meritless escalation,” saying Colorado is fully complying with the compact and that the canal is unnecessary. They assert that the lawsuit is an attempt to renegotiate a century-old agreement.

The South Platte River Compact, signed in 1923 and ratified by Congress in 1926, allocates water rights between Colorado and Nebraska. Under the compact, Nebraska is entitled to 120 cubic feet per second (cfs) of water during the irrigation season (April 1 to October 15). Additionally, Nebraska can divert up to 500 cfs during the non-irrigation season, provided it constructs a canal to transport the water. The Perkins County Canal is Nebraska’s proposed solution to this requirement.

Nebraska lawmakers approved the canal project in 2022, citing concerns over Colorado's increased water use. However, Colorado officials contend that the canal is unnecessary and that Nebraska's claims are speculative. They argue that the lawsuit is an attempt to renegotiate the century-old compact and that it lacks a legal basis for Supreme Court intervention.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Attorney General Phil Weiser have characterized Nebraska's lawsuit as a "meritless escalation" and urged the Supreme Court to reject it. They assert that Colorado is fully complying with the South Platte River Compact and that the dispute is not ripe for judicial resolution. Weiser emphasized that even if the Court decides to take up part or all of Nebraska’s case, he is confident that Colorado will prevail on the merits.

If the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case, it could have significant implications for water rights and interstate agreements. A ruling in favor of Nebraska could set a precedent for renegotiating long-standing water compacts, potentially affecting other states with similar agreements. Conversely, a ruling in favor of Colorado could reinforce the sanctity of existing compacts and discourage future challenges.

The U.S. Supreme Court has yet to decide whether it will take up the case. If the Court agrees to hear the case, it could take years before justices hear oral arguments or issue an opinion. In the meantime, both states continue to monitor the situation closely, as the outcome could have lasting effects on water management and interstate relations in the region.

North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp; Carla Warren has spent decades quietly becoming part of the family for countless North Platte children — a steady presence who shows up, celebrates small victories, and greets each morning with a smile. This month, she was named the Community Hero for Kids by The Post and Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers, an honor she met with genuine surprise and humility.

Her path into childcare wasn’t sudden. “Oh geez, that was a long time ago,” she laughs when asked how she first started working with kids. She began at North Platte Community Daycare in the infant room, later spent ten years with Head Start, and about fifteen years ago she started working for the school system. What began as a lunchroom para eventually became a role she knew was meant for her when coworkers encouraged her to apply for a special-needs para position. “That’s kind of where my heart is,” she says.

Carla points to family as one root of that calling. Growing up, she had a cousin with cerebral palsy who “was just always special to me,” and her parents influenced her outlook as well — they were foster parents to many children. Those early experiences, combined with a faith community she credits, helped shape a mindset that’s equal parts practical and deeply affectionate.

She speaks about the kids she works with with a soft, clear affection. “They teach me just as much as I teach them,” she says. “They’re open and loving and caring — especially the ones I work with at Adams. I’ve worked with kids I first met in Head Start who just graduated last year. That’s crazy.” Watching that arc — from preschool to graduation — is what Carla calls the most amazing part of the job.

There are difficult moments, of course, and she’s honest about that. Some days come with challenges, but those are quickly overshadowed by the small, human moments her work creates. 

“Then you go to the grocery store and from clear across the store you hear, ‘Miss Carla,’ and a kid comes running and gives you a hug,” she said with a smile. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Carla admires the courage of the children she supports. 

“They have so many struggles, but yet unconditional love,” she says. “They’re so strong — they’re not afraid of anything. They just try things — that’s awesome.” 

Her respect for their capability is direct and warm: “They can do anything that we can do.”

Some stories from her years stand out as reminders that her job stretches far beyond the classroom. Once, a single mother invited Carla to help on a family trip to Puerto Rico so the mom could relax and enjoy a vacation. 

“At first it was all a joke — the little girl came to school and said, ‘You can come in my suitcase,’” Carla remembers. When the mom really did call and ask her to come, the trip turned into an unforgettable experience and an example of how deep the bonds she builds with families can run.

When asked what it felt like to be nominated, Carla called the recognition “humbling” and a little surprising. “I’m just out there doing my job,” she said. The nomination came from a family she has known since preschool — a fact that makes the award as much about shared history as it is about her work.

Carla’s support system at home is part of what keeps her giving so much to others. 

“My husband, of course. He’s always my biggest fan,” she says, noting he’s the one who encourages her to slow down when she needs it. Faith and the church community are also central pillars in the way she approaches life and work.

Practical advice is never far from Carla’s lips. For anyone thinking about working in childcare or special education, she recommends trying it out first. “Shadow a day in the special needs room and see if it’s a fit,” she suggests, echoing the advice she received early in her career. “It’s not for everybody.”

Her gratitude extends to the families who have trusted her with their children, the co-workers who encouraged her, and the community that has embraced her over the years. “Once they’re part of my circle, they’re always part of my circle,” she says.

Quiet, steady, and full of heart, Carla Warren isn’t looking for praise. The Post & Prairie Friends & Flowers Present: This Month's Community Hero For Kids - Carla Warren

McCOOK, Neb. — A beloved McCook landmark known for its warm breads, pastries, and deep local roots has officially closed its doors. Embers Bakery &amp; Café announced Sunday that Saturday marked its final day of business, ending nearly seven decades of bakery tradition in the city’s downtown.

“With deep sadness, we’re here to share that Saturday was Embers Bakery’s final day,” owners Andrew and Alix Ambriz wrote in a Facebook post. “We are deeply grateful for everyone who supported us and especially thankful for our team… We will always cherish the memories we’ve made with all of you.”

The announcement came just one week after Embers shut down its new drive-thru location, which the owners said was part of “holiday planning.” The decision to close completely surprised many, though a few community members noted signs of struggle in recent days. One commenter on social media mentioned the bakery’s “bare shelves" last week, calling it “a red flag” that hinted at what was to come.

The bakery’s roots trace back to 1957, when Matt and Shelly Sehnert’s family first opened Sehnert’s Bakery. Over the decades, the shop became a McCook institution and a cornerstone of the downtown business district. Its legacy reached national acclaim in 2019 when Sehnert’s earned a James Beard America’s Classics Award — the only Nebraska business ever to receive the honor.

In August 2021, Andrew and Alix Ambriz purchased the bakery from the Sehnerts, later rebranding it as Embers Bakery &amp; Café. The couple expanded operations this spring with the addition of a drive-thru location and had teased plans for a new store in Kearney.

Several social media commenters defended the Ambriz family following the announcement, pointing to today’s economic hardships — from rising supply costs to staffing challenges — that continue to squeeze small, locally owned businesses. Others suggested that rapid growth, including the drive-thru expansion and Kearney plans, may have placed financial strain on the bakery.

The Ambriz family did not specify the reasons behind the decision to close but noted that they “succeeded at times and also made [their] mistakes along the way.”

While Embers’ ovens have gone cold for now, its impact on McCook’s culture — and its rare mark on Nebraska’s culinary map — will be remembered long after the final loaf left the oven.

From James Beard to Goodbye: McCook’s Beloved Embers Bakery Ends a Nebraska Legacy

The North Platte City Council will meet Tuesday evening to consider several community-impacting items, including a rezoning request, updates to the city’s bulky trash collection ordinance, and multiple property sales.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall with an invocation from Rev. Jonathan Sorensen of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and roll call.

Among the items on the consent agenda, council members will review minutes from previous meetings, the August treasurer’s report, and several agreements — including a one-year interlocal renewal with Lincoln County for network services and a human resources services contract with Zelle. Mayor Brandon Kelliher is also expected to appoint Tony Miller as the city’s new Utilities Manager.

Under the regular agenda, council will hold the second reading of an ordinance to rezone property at 4684 and 4602 Rodeo Road from agricultural to highway commercial use. Another proposal up for discussion would amend the city’s bulky trash collection rules, potentially changing how large-item pickups are handled.

A series of public hearings are also scheduled for the potential sale of several city-owned properties, including 716 W. 8th Street, 1902 N. Sheridan, 603 S. Maple, 2220 W. 4th Street, and 1015 N. Bryan.

The council may also consider authorizing payments to Van Kirk Bros., Level LLC, and Paulsen Inc. before adjourning. A closed session could be held if necessary to discuss personnel, real estate, or legal matters.

City Council to Discuss Rezoning, Trash Collection Changes, and Property Sales Tuesday

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met Wednesday night at McCook Community College, covering topics ranging from international art and student engagement to new academic programs and facility improvements.

The meeting began with a special work session featuring the American Watercolor Society’s International Traveling Show, now on display at the Wrightstone Gallery in McCook through October 27. The exhibit includes between 40 and 50 pieces from artists around the world and is the only stop for the show in Nebraska. MPCC President Ryan Purdy noted that the college has already secured the exhibit’s return for fall 2026 and 2027.

During the meeting, board members were introduced to several members of the MPCC community, including advisors of the International Club, which currently includes students from more than 22 countries. The board also met residence life assistants and student trustees Vernon Graham and Jackson DeLaveau, who are helping lead student engagement efforts on campus this year.

New hires were recognized as well, including Dr. Evan Olson, a Gothenburg native and new math instructor in McCook, and Caleb Taylor, the new Business and Community Education administrative assistant. The board also honored Karen Haller, assistant to President Purdy, who is retiring after 26 years with the college.

Among action items, the board approved the creation of a Pickleball Club, reflecting growing student interest in the sport. Purdy said the club will begin at the student level but could expand into a competitive athletic program in the future.

The college also approved the purchase of two 2022 semi-trucks for the CDL training program, expanding the fleet to five vehicles. The additions will allow students to train on both automatic and manual transmissions, preparing them for a wider range of driving opportunities.

In other business, the board accepted a bid from Beverage Construction for just under $85,000 to complete soil work and site preparation on the North Platte campus. The project will prepare space for future student housing, a need driven by rising enrollment.

Enrollment continues to trend upward across all MPCC campuses. Overall enrollment has increased by 8.5% compared to last year — the college’s highest total since 2013–2014. Dual-credit enrollment is up 23%, highlighting the success of partnerships with area high schools.

Students and community members are also encouraged to take advantage of upcoming registration opportunities.

In community news, the North Platte campus will host a Trunk-or-Treat event on October 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at South Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

MPCC will also celebrate its 60th anniversary this Saturday with a special volleyball game against Otero. A recognition ceremony begins at 1:55 p.m., followed by the first serve at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

College officials say they’re encouraged by the momentum heading into the new year, pointing to growing enrollment, student engagement, and community involvement across all MPCC campuses.

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation and KIDS Klub are inviting the community to enjoy a night under the stars at this year’s Movie on the Field event. Sponsored by NebraskaLand Bank, the annual fall tradition allows families to watch a family-friendly movie while supporting local afterschool programs.

This year’s featured film, Moana 2, was chosen by the community through a social media vote. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 6 p.m. 

Families are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks, and enjoy tailgate-style concessions including hamburgers and hot dogs. Admission is free, with a suggested donation supporting KIDS Klub.

The event also coincides with National Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide celebration of afterschool programs keeping their “lights on” for students.

 Carrie Lineman of KIDS Klub said, “We want everyone in our community to know that they're invited...just a great way for us to give back to the community that supports us.”

Attendees can also receive stadium blankets featuring the KIDS Klub logo, available to the first 100 families. Organizers ask that guests respect the field, avoiding sunflower seeds or gum, as the event takes place on the school’s athletic field.

Now in its third year, Movie on the Field offers families a fun, free, and safe evening while supporting afterschool programs in North Platte.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte City Council worked through a full agenda Tuesday night, approving bond authorizations, new city equipment financing, and forwarding an annexation study for future review.

Mayor Brandon Kelliher recapped the meeting Wednesday morning on Good Morning North Platte on FM 98.1/AM 1410, KOOQ-AM, calling it “a pretty good meeting” — one without conflict and full of progress on ongoing city projects.

Among the consent agenda items, the council approved several liquor licenses, reappointed Joe Staroska to a second term on the Community Redevelopment Authority Board, and renewed a paramedic ride-along agreement with Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. Kelliher said the partnership helps with firefighter and paramedic recruitment while giving students hands-on experience.

The council also approved a contract with Routeware, a company providing route-optimization software for sanitation trucks. The technology helps drivers create more fuel-efficient routes and documents collection stops with timestamped photos — a feature Kelliher said helps resolve occasional missed-trash disputes.

Another consent item involved a subdivision realignment on East 11th Street, allowing the Lincoln County Community Development Corporation to prepare lots for future housing construction.

Council members also discussed a property acquisition grant used to purchase and demolish unsafe structures. The city voted to counter an owner’s offer at half the asking price — a move Kelliher said likely means the deal won’t go through.

On the regular agenda, the council held a first reading for Ordinance 4228, authorizing up to $19.5 million in general obligation bonds to cover paving and water district projects completed in recent years. Kelliher explained that the bonds convert short-term “warrants” — essentially one-year construction loans — into longer-term municipal debt with fixed interest rates.

“Municipal bonds lock in the rate for five years,” Kelliher said. “After that, we can refinance or pay them off early if conditions improve.”

Council members also corrected a clerical error in the city’s salary schedule tied to last month’s budget approval. The change did not alter the overall budget amount.

The council approved lease financing for a new Elgin Pelican NP street sweeper, which recently arrived in North Platte. The $277,000 piece of equipment replaces one of the city’s older units, which will remain in service as backup.

Kelliher joked that before his term ends, he hopes to “drive the street sweeper” himself, calling the machine “pretty exciting.”

The council also ratified actions by City Administrator Lane Gross in his role with the League Association of Risk Management, which handles insurance matters for municipalities across Nebraska.

Council members voted to forward the 2025 Annexation Study for East Sixth Street to the city’s Planning Commission for review and public hearing. The study identifies small unincorporated “islands” surrounded by city property that could be annexed into North Platte.

The council also held a public hearing concerning property at Lakeview and Front Streets, where a company plans to expand equipment at an existing cell tower site. A lease agreement for the expansion is expected to come back for council approval later this month.

Finally, council members approved rezoning for property at 4684 and 4602 Rodeo Road, the site of the former drive-in theater on the west side of town. The area, currently zoned for agriculture, will shift to commercial zoning to allow for new business development.

The next North Platte City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21, with possible follow-up discussion on the East Sixth Street annexation proposal.

“It’s been a busy stretch,” Kelliher said. “Between budget work, projects, and regular meetings, there’s a lot happening — but that’s a good thing for North Platte.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors approved the 2025-26 budget Wednesday during a meeting on the North Platte campus while also receiving updates on student life, faculty, and campus initiatives.

The meeting began with public hearings on setting the 2025 property tax requirement and adopting the college’s budget. No members of the public spoke during either hearing. MPCC President Ryan Purdy described the hearings as “pretty uneventful,” noting that most funding now comes from the state-funded Future Fund rather than property taxes.

“Our levy for the second year, our maximum, is $0.02,” Purdy said. “The board elected to stay with the $0.02 capital levy, which has been in place for about the last 10 years. That’s the funding we’re allowed to use for capital construction and facility renovation.”

The college’s total budget for all funds is just under $60 million, with $5.45 million funded through property taxes. MPCC maintains facilities across its 18-county service area, with a combined insurable value of $200 million.

Fall enrollment has increased 9.5%, and dual enrollment is up 24%, which Purdy said benefits students while supporting funding. “Right now in the fall of '25 compared to fall of '24, we’re experiencing about a 9.5% increase in enrollment, which is huge, and will help our funding. Dual enrollment has been fantastic…we’re seeing a 24% increase right now in dual enrollment across the service area,” he said.

Student trustees Vernon Graham of North Platte and Jackson Delevaux of McCook gave updates on intramurals, sports, concerts, and festivals. “It’s fun to hear the things that are going on—the intramurals, the student life, some of the concerts and festivals. Great to have students at the table to get their input,” Purdy said. 

Faculty representative Jesse Lovett highlighted English Department conferences and publications.

Other business included approving August bills totaling $1.4 million, settling a 22-year-old worker’s compensation claim, and carrying forward $18.6 million in unused budget authority. 

The next regular MPCC board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15 at MCC East Campus in McCook.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Lincoln County will soon roll out a new tool to help combat substance abuse: a real-time Opioid and Stimulant Monitoring System designed to track risk factors, protective factors, and community needs.

Erin Bone, coordinator for Substance Abuse Prevention with Community Connections, said the project is part of a regional effort funded through the Iowa State University Public Science Collaborative. Lincoln County was one of only a handful of counties in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa selected to participate.

“This is a huge undertaking,” Bone said. “We’re getting a dashboard that helps us track risk and protective factors within our community. We’re really excited to launch it in the very near future.”

The dashboard will pull data from multiple partners, including Great Plains Health, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and Stop Overdose Nebraska. That information will allow prevention teams to identify trends—such as age groups, neighborhoods, or language demographics most affected by substance use—and tailor outreach accordingly.

Bone explained that the system won’t collect personal details but will instead provide broad demographic snapshots. “We’re not looking at specific names or addresses,” she said. “It’s very baseline data, but it will help us target how we talk to people and how we get information out there.”

One early finding is that areas north of the railroad in North Platte are underserved, and Bone hopes the dashboard will guide resources where they’re most needed. Data will also measure the effectiveness of local interventions, allowing organizations to adjust strategies in real time.

Community involvement has been central from the beginning. Listening sessions with nonprofits, law enforcement, schools, and health providers helped shape what the system should track and how it should be used. The goal, Bone said, is threefold: reduce overdoses, support at-risk populations, and strengthen local partnerships.

“We want to reduce harm, whether that’s lowering substance use overall or just getting more Narcan into the right hands,” Bone said. “At-risk populations need extra support, and that improves quality of life for everyone. And this is a great way to bring our community partners together.”

Lincoln County is also working to expand access to resources. While only two local pharmacies currently distribute free Narcan, a vending machine stocked with the overdose-reversing medication is expected to be available soon.

Bone encouraged residents to get involved by staying connected online and helping spread the word. “Support doesn’t have to be financial,” she said. “Go to our Facebook, like our stuff, share our stuff. If you want to be more involved, give us a call or stop by our office.”

Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation to host 22nd annual fundraiser Sept. 16

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A steak dinner, auctions, and live music will all be part of the 22nd annual Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

The evening begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Guests will enjoy a New York strip steak with baked potato, salad, dessert bar, and two complimentary drinks. Entertainment will be provided by the Flat Rock Irregulars, with a silent auction running from 5 to 7 p.m. and a live auction to follow.

Organizers Janet Cox and Kathy Hahn said the fundraiser plays a vital role in helping local cancer patients. The Gift of Hope provides financial assistance to families across western Nebraska — stretching as far as Lexington to the east, the Wyoming border to the west, and into South Dakota and Kansas. Support can include help with gas, utilities, and rent.

“All of our funding comes from donations and events like this banquet,” Hahn said. “Your donation means hope, relief, and strength for someone facing the fight of their life. No one should battle cancer alone.”

The foundation assists as many as 80 people each year, and every dollar raised stays in the region. Cox called the banquet “a really, really fun evening” and “a rewarding evening because we feel like we can help a lot of people.” She added that the community has been supportive across generations throughout the fundraiser’s 22-year history.

Organizers say the night promises not only good food and community spirit but also big-ticket auction items, including Husker volleyball tickets and Husker football tickets — with one package offering 50-yard line seats in the clubhouse.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — After years of running boards, hosting shows, and chasing stories across Nebraska, Allison Peck is now the news director North Platte didn’t know it needed — until now. Listeners quickly noticed her arrival on the airwaves, sending emails and texts praising the “new news lady” — articulate, clear, and engaging.

Peck is Eagle Media’s storyteller behind North Platte Post and Sandhills Post, bringing a mix of experience, energy, and a passion for local stories.

“Allison was the one we were waiting for,” said Operations Manager Derek Beck. “We had a lot of people that applied for this job. We were super picky about it, so this job’s been open since April I think. We really, really wanted to make sure that we didn’t hit a single or a double — we really wanted to hit a home run and we were very patient.”

Peck’s journey in radio began in McCook in 2016. Then a college student, she balanced her time between running the board for live sports broadcasts and serving as an unpaid intern. She managed summer remote events, hosted her own show, and even delivered weather forecasts. Within a year, she was promoted to paid intern while pursuing theater and media communications at Doane University.

When she returned to McCook in 2019, Peck took on a full-time role in sales. She also hosted a midday show, continued weather reports, and occasionally board operated. She worked closely with the operations manager daily, an experience that gave her a front-row seat to the complexities of running a station.

Those years gave her a reputation for versatility. “Which you can see, is why she was a really great candidate for this job, because [she's] kind of a Swiss Army knife that knows how to do a lot of things,” Beck said. “...but I kind of turned [her] loose after three days and said, hey, go do it.”

In fall of 2020, Peck left McCook to move to Lincoln. She worked as a client marketing coordinator in sales for NRG Media from May 2021 through September. That fall, her first daughter, Raegan, was born, and Peck stepped away from broadcasting and sales to focus on motherhood.

The next three years were a whirlwind of moves — a return to McCook, a short stay in Mitchell, then a year in Ogallala. Along the way, Peck and her husband, Joseph — a North Platte native and now EMT — welcomed their second daughter, Ryleigh, this past April.

“Being a stay-at-home mom was the most rewarding and the most overwhelming thing I’ve ever done,” Peck said. “I loved every moment with my girls, but I also felt like I was missing a part of myself.&nbsp; — My husband even says I come home happier. I feel like everyone gets a better version of me.”

For Beck, who worked with Peck years ago in McCook, seeing her return to radio was both exciting and natural. “You kind of have it in your head who that person might be or what they would sound like,” he said. “Literally when I saw [her] application come through, I’m like box checked, box checked, box checked.”

Listeners have echoed his confidence. “I don’t know how many texts and emails I’ve had saying hey, we like the new news lady. She sounds really good. She’s very articulate. The news is really good,” Beck said.

Now based in North Platte, Peck has taken on the dual role of directing news coverage and hosting Good Morning North Platte at 9 a.m. on 98.1 FM. She describes herself first and foremost as a storyteller — a passion rooted in theater from the age of five and carried through her years of writing, reporting, and broadcasting.

“You do, you kind of light up about the news stuff,” Beck told her during their on-air introduction. “You’re easy to listen to. We’re just gonna continue to let you do some of the things that you enjoy doing. But I think that morning show on 98.1 has got your name kind of written all over it.” That show airs from 6 a.m to 10 a.m. with news and interview focus from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Peck said she hopes the community will share stories with her. 

“There’s only one of me and there’s a very big town,” she said. “If there’s news out there that I don’t know about that I should know about, if there’s an event happening that should be a story — yeah, definitely reach out. New digital platform looks to navigate ICU experience for patients’ families.

A&nbsp;digital platform years in the making, created through a collaboration between the UNMC College of Nursing, UNeMed, UNeTech and Nebraska Medicine, will position UNMC at the forefront of health care innovation, its creators said.

<a href="https://familyroom.health/" target="_blank">Familyroom.health</a>&nbsp;now is scaling nationally to support families during critical care crises.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Twelve years ago, Breanna Hetland, PhD, then a critical care nurse, sat at her father’s ICU bedside and realized something : Despite all her clinical training, she felt helpless as a patient’s family member.

“The system I had worked in for years suddenly felt foreign when I was on the family side of the hospital bed,” said Dr. Hetland, associate professor in the UNMC College of Nursing and the nurse-researcher who developed Familyroom.health. “That experience showed me that we’ve been missing an entire half of the healing equation. We focus intensely on the patient but leave families to just figure it out.”

That insight led to years of NIH-funded research for Dr. Hetland, but the transformation from research to commercial application came in 2023, when she partnered with product strategist Greg Nelson. Nelson’s background in innovation and human-centered design proved instrumental in evolving Familyroom.health from a research endeavor into a scalable commercial solution poised to change the industry paradigm for family engagement.

“Familyroom.health is a clinically validated digital platform that transforms overwhelmed family caregivers into confident care partners,” Dr. Hetland said. “It’s the first platform of its kind to allow families to chart their contributions directly in the electronic health record, making family input a documented part of patient care.”

The program provides evidence-based tools, resources and peer guidance to address the gap in family engagement during critical care. Drawing from Dr. Hetland’s work as an implementation scientist and Nelson’s human-centered design experience, the platform is designed to ensure sustainable adoption within complex health care systems.

The project has secured more than $1 million in funding, and the platform continues to be refined through clinical trials at Nebraska Medicine, even while signing pilot partnerships with other major health systems.
