Carp-O-Rama at Lake Maloney SRA

Caro-O-Rama is a popular family-friendly event for anglers of all ages.

Carp-O-Rama is a popular family-friendly event for anglers of all ages.

NORTH PLATTE — Carp-O-Rama is back in 2015 at Lake Maloney State Recreation Area (SRA) outlet area. This popular, family-friendly event will be held Saturday, July 11.

Anglers of all ages interested in learning all aspects of carp fishing are invited to attend this free event from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the main boat ramp near the jetty. Carp caught by anglers will be used in demonstrations on cleaning, preparing and cooking the fish. The cooked fish then will be served as a free lunch.

Other activities include fish printing and Dutch oven cooking. Loaner fishing poles and bait will be available.

Carp is an excellent fish for beginning anglers to pursue because they are plentiful statewide, and the required equipment is relatively simple. The strong-fighting fish also is not restricted by bag, possession limits or size limits.

The area will be chummed with a corn mixture the day before the event to attract carp to the area. Canned, whole kernel corn and dough baits are good bait options for catching carp.

A park entry permit is required of all vehicles entering Lake Maloney SRA, located 4 miles south of North Platte. A fishing license is required of anglers age 16 and older. Both permits may be purchased at the park.

‘Kites and Castles’ Event at Lake McConaughy Cancelled

Nebraska_game_and_parksNORTH PLATTE — The 26th annual Kites and Castles event held at Lake McConaughy has been canceled this year because of high-water levels.

The coordinating committee of Kites and Castles released the news last week. With high-water levels, there will not be enough beach areas to accommodate the competition and provide parking for onlookers that come to view the sand sculptures.

Lake levels are expected to remain at near capacity throughout the summer. Steady rainfalls early this spring and high South Platte River flows reduced the need for downstream irrigation outflows from Lake McConaughy.

This is the first year that the sand-sculpture competition has been cancelled; however the Kites and Castles committee is planning on hosting the annual event again next year. The date for the 27th annual Kites and Castles has been set for July 30, 2016.
